President Franklin Delano Roosevelt
(FDR) built the Little White House
in 1932 before he became president
in 1933. He had a disease called polio,
which caused him to lose the use of
his legs. He thought that swimming
in the warm springs near his house
would make him feel better. Warm
Springs are spouts or streams of
water that are already warm when
they come out of the ground.
They are rare and very different
from the water you drink.
When visiting Roosevelt's home in
Warm Springs, GA, you can look at
his special car. It has hand controls
to drive with since he had no use of
his legs.
