The Pine Mountain Trail
There are nearly 40 miles of trails in F.D. Roosevelt State Park for hikers only. You may want to
consult a map of the Pine Mountain Trail, available at the F.D. Roosevelt State Park Office or at
Callaway Country Store, to decide which hike best suits your interests. A good rule of
thumb is to allow 30-45 minutes per mile.
Here you can experience the beauty of Pine Mountain first-hand, including unusual rock outcroppings
and spectacular waterfalls. The trails are very user-friendly, marked with distance indicators and
a system of color-coded markers.
While each part of the trail is interesting in its own right, Dowdell's Knob Loop near the center
of the trail makes a great day hike and is popular for its views and historical backdrop. Plan
two to three hours for the 4.3 mile trip depending on your pace.
Many hikers feel the Wolfden Loop is one of the most beautiful stretches of trial in the Southeast.
The 6.5 mile loop travels past beaver dams, over Hogback Mountain and along several waterfalls.
Or try the Mountain Creek Nature Trail, which features lots of interesting plant life.
The Pine Mountain Trail Association's members and volunteers created the hiking trails and
maintain the trails year-round. The association has continued to cut new trails and build new
loops, as well as instituting an Adopt-A-Trail program that allows various groups to assist in
the trails upkeep.
