In the 1930s, Cason and Virginia Callaway discovered a place of pristine beauty with
exquisite natural springs in west central Georgia. Because of their enchantment with the
area, they purchased thousands of acres of depleted cotton fields, including the land that is
Callaway Gardens today.
With a mind towards preservation, the Callaways began developing the environment, cultivating
the native flora - including the rare prunifolia azalea that grows wild here - and creating
a respite from the world. Their plans were to invite their closest friends to their retreat,
but as the Gardens began to take shape, they longed to share it with everyone. Their dreams came
true in 1952 when IDA Cason Gardens opened to the public.
An Overview Of What Callaway Gardens Offers:
The Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center
A brand new entrance to Callaway Gardens takes you on a 2.5 mile drive through serene woodland areas and brings you to one of the largest projects in Callaway's history. The newly opened $12 million Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center, dramatically changes the way guests experience Callaway Gardens. A film, Time & the Garden,runs continually. Interactive kiosks provide guests with information about all there is to see and do throughout Callaway Gardens. The Discovery Center also features an education wing, the art of nature artist Athos Menaboni, a gift shop and the Mountain Creek Cafe. The new Center allows guests to park their cars and enjoy a leisurely stroll along the paths to nearby attractions. Transportation opportunities include walking, biking, riding a tram or taking a water taxi across Mountain Creek Lake.
Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center
A glass enclosed tropical butterfly conservatory that is home to more than 1,000 tropical butterflies
representing more than 50 species. Visitors walk within the tropical environment as butterflies
flutter about freely.

Horticultural Center

This garden/greenhouse complex spreads over five acres and has more than 20,000 square feet
of indoor floral display area. In addition to breathtaking displays that fill the Sibley Center
all year, there is also a 22-foot waterfall.
Mr. Cason's Vegetable Garden
This is a 7.5-acre home demonstration garden that produces more than 400 varieties of crops.

Ida Cason Callaway Memorial Chapel
Named in honor of Cason Callaway's mother, the chapel is a place of inspiration and beauty set in
the heart of Callaway Gardens. Its design is English Gothic, patterned after the rural chapels of the
16th and 17th centuries.
Sixty-Three Holes of Championship Golf
and a nationally recognized tennis and racquetball center make Callaway Gardens a sports
enthusiast's dream. The 18-hole courses and 9-hole executive course present challenging play
with beautiful views. For those desiring a challenge at a more relaxed pace, the outstanding
fly-fishing program is the answer. The Callaway Gardens Gun Club offers skeet, trap, five-stand
and sporting clays.
Discovery Bike Trail
By far the best way to get around to all there is to see and do at Callaway Gardens. A 10 mile
trail that weaves through the woodland gardens and by all major attractions. Guest can rent bikes and helmets at the Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center.
At Callaway Gardens, every season of the year is spectacular. Throughout the Gardens, things are
abuzz with things to do, see, and experience.
Events include: Masters Water-ski Tournament, Celebrate The Arts!, Fantasy In Lights, Sky High Hot Air Ballon Festival, FSU's "Flying
High" Circus, and The Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens, to name just a few.
